How much of the nutrients are retained when freeze drying breast milk?

Freeze drying is an effective method of retaining 99% of key nutrients and the majority of all immunoglobulins while being shelf stable and taking up 1/10 the space.

How long is freeze dried breast milk good for?

When stored properly, unopened freeze dried breast milk pouches are good for at least 3 years. Some sources say it is good for up to 5 years.

I have high lipase, will freeze drying my milk help with that “soapy” taste?

Freeze drying is also an effective method of de-activating lipase enzyme and to stop fat breakdown in the frozen milk. If you notice a metallic taste or soapy aroma, it very well could be due to higher lipase. Freeze drying also is known to improve overall taste and aroma of higher lipase stored breast milk!

What is the best way to freeze breast milk in storage bags in order to then freeze dry it?

Remember to wash your hand prior to opening storage bags and transferring milk. Keep your bags sterile!

  • Immediately chill freshly expressed milk in its collection bottle.

  • Once chilled, remove the bottle from the refrigerator and GENTLY swirl the bottle to re-incorporate any separated milk fats back into the fluid.

  • Once the milk fat is distributed, transfer into your sterile milk storage bag. Minimize touching the interior of the bag with your fingers. 

  • Fill to the recommend fill amount. Do not over fill your bags as it increase the chances of a bag failure during freezing. Seal the bag closed.

  • Lay the bag FLAT for its initial freezing.

  • Let freeze overnight. You may then stack the bags as needed.

What are other uses of freeze dried breast milk?

There are many uses for freeze dried powdered milk from bottles, fortifying foods, bath bombs, milk bath powder, lotions and more!

How do I rehydrate my freeze dried breast milk?

  • Empty the contents of the pouch into a sanitized bottle. Remove and discard the Oxygen Absorbing Packet.

  • Weigh out the water listed on the back of the custom label.

  • Use your desired clean, filtered water. We recommend using clean filtered water. Reverse osmosis water or vapor distilled water are great options and have very low to zero total dissolved solids. Total dissolved solids include all organic and inorganic dissolved contaminants including metals, salts, minerals, and ions. Do not use tap water.

  • Warm the water to your desired (98F-103F | 40C) temperature for your baby. We recommend 100F.

  • Add the warm water into the bottle and allow it to sit for a few minutes. Slowly swirl the water to mix. You can also use a handheld electric milk frother or whisk for incorporating

  • Avoid shaking the bottle as it causes bubbles and makes for a burpy baby and possibly making breast milk butter.

  • Test the temperature and serve to baby!
